aliki van der kruijs
The work of Aliki van der Kruijs originates from context and material research and moves in the intersection of art and design. She operates a studio in The Hague, the Netherlands and works on self initiated research-projects, collaborations and commission based. For every commissioned or autonomous project Aliki investigates which material to use as medium to highlight the relations between colour, nature and space. Her work method involves carefully planned manufacturing however integrating a certain uncontrolled ‘natural’ element in which the coincidence is programmed, leading to a collection of tactile projects and works.Made by Rain is an elemental concept in which rainfall is recorded on textile.
Is it possible to wear the weather? Dutch artist Aliki van der Kruijs asked herself how to capture the experience of rain. For this she developed her own technique called pluviagraphy. Using a film coating that is sensitive to water, it becomes possible to create a visual recording of rainfall on a filmed piece of textile. Whether it’s a soft drizzle or a tropical downpour, the type of rain creates a unique print.
Each Made by Rain textile comes with a handmade notation of the location, date, time interval, millimetres of rain, and weather circumstances under which the pluviagraphy was done. This way, the textiles form a collection of weather data: visual recordings of a specific day in history.
